Smoke Detector Program

SMOKE DETECTORS

The Chenango County Office of Emergency Services has established a Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector program to aid Fire departments in Chenango County with placing Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors in homes where they are needed.

Once a need has been determined, the Fire Chief, or other Chenango County Agency must make a referral to this office. The referral must be for a residence within Chenango County. The homeowner of must be made aware of the referral and agree to a home visit by members of this office to deliver the detectors. This program is only available to home owners; if the occupants are renters then the referral will be turned over to the County Code Enforcement Office.

Once the Chenango County Office of Emergency Services receives the referral and it is reviewed, the local fire chief will be notified of the referral, and a home visit will be scheduled with the homeowners.

Once the member of the Chenango County Bureau arrives at the residence, home fire safety and prevention information will be reviewed with the members of the household. Once that is completed the homeowner will be asked to install the smoke/ CO detectors per manufacturer’s instructions. Once the detectors have been properly installed, any questions will be answered and Fire Prevention literature, and contact information for this office will be left with the homeowner.

After 30 days a member from this office will make contact with the homeowner to answer any questions that may have arisen since the installation of the detectors.
